Six species worth your time.
Rainbow trout are the easy ones. Bass take patience. The rest are the kind of fish you tell stories about back at the cabin.
Rainbow Trout
The reason most people come. Arizona Game and Fish stocks rainbows in the lake from March through July. They take PowerBait, salmon eggs, small spinners. Easy bite for kids.
Brook Trout
Smaller cousin to the rainbow. Beautifully colored. They hold in cooler water near the shaded shorelines. Same flies and small spinners that work for rainbows will work here.
Largemouth Bass
Hold near the weed lines and the south shore drop-offs. Plastic worms, jigs, topwater at dawn. The patient angler's fish.
Channel Catfish
Fish them after the sun drops with stink bait or chicken liver near the bottom. Easy to find off the dock at night.
Sunfish
Kids' fish. Worms under a bobber, panfish-sized hook, all afternoon. Bring a small frying pan.
Walleye
Not the easy bite. Light leader, jigs, or live minnows worked near the bottom in low light. Worth the patience.
The lake fishes different by season.
Winter
Slow but workable. Trout still bite on the bottom. The lake rarely freezes hard. Cabins are quiet, the lake is yours.
Spring & Summer
The window. AZGFD stocks rainbows March through July. Bass wake up in May. Kids are out of school. Book early.
Fall
Crowds drop. Water cools. Bass go on a feeding tear before winter. Best month most years is October.
License first. Buy it online, save a trip.
Anyone 10 and older needs a current Arizona Game and Fish license. Get it at azgfd.gov before you come up. A day license runs about $20. Annual is around $37. Bring a printed copy or have it on your phone. Wardens do check.
You'll catch fish either way. Boats catch more.
From the dock
Walk out, drop a line, done. Best for kids, evenings, and casual mornings. Trout and sunfish hit from shore.
From a fishing boat
Reaches the better water. Quiet electric trolling motor means you can sneak up on the trout schools. $125 per 3-hour slot. See boats →
